A Civic Trust Award winning river restoration scheme which has created a popular new riverside public open space in the centre of Horncastle.
This river restoration project has transformed a run-down backland into a popular and attractive gateway to Horncastle's town centre. The completed scheme received a Civic Trust Award. A refurbished bridge across the river provides access to the town centre from the principal car parks on the opposite bank.
A sequence of riffles and pools along the river creates dancing patterns of light and a sequence of small bays and headlands provide access for fishing, strolling and children's play. The new riverside park is now a much visited, attractive asset for the local community. The design functions as an effective flood defence for the town, while also providing a sequence of rich aquatic and riparian habitats.
