Norwich University of the Arts, Riverside
A riverside open space for Norwich University of the Arts’ students, incorporating south-facing terraces for a café, seating and performance
This new riverside space enhances the Riverside Walk along the River Wensum, creating a sunny pocket park at an accessible hub just off Duke Street. The scheme resolves complex level changes, creating a dynamic, multi-level space with access for all, including cyclists. Hard landscape materials create a striking transition from dark stone surfaces at the building forecourt to Dutch clay narrow bricks on the lower terraces. Groups of River Birch and multi-stem shade trees, with plantings of ornamental grasses and perennials provide a focus on the terraces for meeting, sitting and watching. This same palette of hard landscape materials continues along the Duke Street frontage, where a broad footpath provides space for a line of fastigiate oaks on the approach to the building entrance.
