Constable Park, Brantham
An evocative landscape for an adventure activity centre which accommodates suberb facilities for canoeing, camping and outdoor team work in a sensitive riverside setting
This 1.3ha site is on the banks of the River Stour in the Dedham Vale AONB. The scheme incorporates a car park, a range of small buildings, including the instructor’s cabin, bunk/youth classrooms and toilet facilities; a camping field and cabins (pods) arranged around a communal fire-pit. A secluded canoe launch pool is accessed via meadow and decking, with a changing room and café with outdoor kitchen alongside. The riparian habitats and landscape are conserved and enhanced with sensitive conservation works. The principal activity zones are concealed in river views by willow screens but grassed picnic terraces, a bird observation deck and a nature trail provide controlled access to the river. Sheltered by the ‘Wildlife Island,’ a narrow lagoon is a wonderful place for bridge building, a rope swing and pond dipping.
