King Edward's Quay

The landscapes of the King Edward Quay student accommodation echo the transitional qualities of the inter-tidal mudflats along the adjacent River Colne.

The landscape falls away from the curved student blocks towards the river. Against this solid built edge, the landform resembles the eroded fringes of the floodplain, with sinuous terraces, hedges and walls. Meadow/reed-like grasses reflect the character of the adjacent marshes and groups of trees mark the edge of the higher ground, framing views towards the river. Alongside the quay, an events space is set against the backdrop of the river surrounded by terraces, lawns and seating walls. This is a robust, lively space with a dynamic form which reflects the curve of the buildings. The transitional floodplain character continues to the streetscapes on the perimeter of the site with flowing landform and meadow alongside points of service/car park access and a more formal shared space to the south.
