Analysis
Bell's School, Cambridge

A vision for the phased redevelopment of a leading international language school which will create a contemporary campus in a parkland setting.

Inspired by the crisp hierarchy and timeless appeal of the Cambridge colleges, the masterplan for Bell's School provides a strategic plan to re-organise the site and address opportunities for future development.

Phase one focuses on rationalising existing patterns of circulation and improving the sequence of arrival. A new reception building becomes the gateway to a central courtyard and the social hub of the College with connections to the classrooms, canteen and parkland beyond. The paths, terraces and courtyards are aligned to anchor and connect buildings, while establishing logical links to future buildings, sports facilities and events spaces. The campus is designed to respond to the needs of a multicultural group of young people who like a variety of places to meet and hang out, but who also need privacy.
