Castlerock Promenade
Gateways to the Causeway Coast, NI

Two gateway projects have transformed access to Coleraine's stunning coastline. New promenades, dune boardwalks, car park layouts and cliff-top walkways redefine patterns of circulation, providing access to local beaches and leading visitors to a sequence of dramatic viewpoints.

Concept designs for the seafront landscapes of Castlerock and Whiterocks Beach re-connect local communities and visitors to the dramatic Coleraine coastline, providing high quality access to beaches while conserving valuable dune habitats. The proposals, which have since been implemented, address issues of seasonality, safety and land use with design flair so that the form of paths, viewpoints, promenades and car parks reflects and defines the transition to the beach in a locally distinctive, sustainable way.

At Whiterocks a dramatic cliff-top walkway incorporates a sequence of viewpoints and bridges.  At Castlerock, a flowing wall inspired by the form of the massive beachfront dunes, defines the edge of a new promenade.
