Ely Country Park

A new Country Park on the edge of the Isle of Ely which encourages access to the Great Ouse river meadows, reedbeds and waterways on the edge of the Fens.

The land immediately to the east of Ely has historically been the 'working margin' of the Isle of Ely, with a diverse mix of waterways, orchards, cress beds, causeways and quays. The area was also crossed by the historic drove road which continued as a causeway across the marshes to connect the Isles of Ely and Stuntney. This is now the site for Ely's Country Park. The design proposals must strike a balance between the need for habitat conservation and demands for accessibility. The solution is a layout which re-invents the historic drove so that it becomes the focus for carefully designed activity zones and routes which skirt around sensitive habitats and out to a new landmark bridge over the River Ouse. The Country Park offers superb 'postcard' views - to Ely Cathedral, across local lakes and wetlands and out to the fens.
