Bain Valley Park, Horncastle

Sheils Flynn led a multi-disciplinary design team to transform a disused landfill site into a popular community park. It is now a focus for meeting, play, recreation and environmental education and provides superb new views from a riverside terrace.

The site for Bain Valley Park was originally occupied by a brick and tile works, but when this closed it was used as a refuse tip for nearly 60 years. New residential housing on an adjacent plot provided the opportunity to develop a community park which is now a key link along the River Bain to the town centre. The design is founded on a detailed feasibility study which considered site contamination, gas emissions, hydrology and waste management, as well as ecological, landscape and urban design issues. The local community worked with us to shape every aspect of the design. The new community park incorporates areas for informal recreation, play, cycling, walking and nature conservation. It offers a completely new range of riverside views, as well as opportunities for interpretation and environmental education.
